High blood pressure is one of the most prevalent health concerns in the UK.
The condition, which is also known as hypertension, affects on in four Brits.
But apparently, there are ways to lower bp by changing what you drink.
Experts believe that sipping this fruit juice could help to combat high blood pressure.
Here’s everything you need to know.
Various studies have shown that drinking pomegranate juice can lower bp.
The red fruit works as an angiotensis converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE), which cuts hypertension risk.
This is because the ACE blocker opens up the body’s vessels, allowing more blood and oxygen to reach heart.
A study published in the NCBI found that drinking two ounces of pomegranate juice can have positive effects.
It found 70% of participants saw a 36% drop in ACE activity, causing a 5% reduction in systolic blood pressure.
The paper concluded: “Its ability to act as an ACE inhibitor (angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor) is what allows pomegranate juice to lower blood pressure.
“ACE inhibitors include high blood pressure drugs like lisinopril and work by decreasing angiotensin activity, an enzyme that is made when the kidneys receive a signal to help blood pressure.”
This isn’t the only study to highlight the benefits of pomegranate juice.
In 2013, researchers found pomegranate juice reduced hypertension risk in those who consumed 150ml of the fruity liquid for two weeks.
As research is still in its infancy, making more healthy changes to your diet is advisable.
The NHS advises Brits to reduce the amount of salt they are consuming, as this raises bp.
As well as this, patients are warned to follow a balanced diet and only drink alcohol in moderation.
Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising and giving up smoking can also help to lower your blood pressure.
If you have concerns about your bp, it’s advisable to consult your doctor.
