Doing it differently! Duchess Meghan’s first royal baby is on the way, and her pregnancy has differed from her sister-in-law Duchess Kate’s.
The Duchess of Cambridge, 37, and her husband, Prince William, share three children. Prince George, 5, was born in 2013, followed by Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, 11 months, in 2015 and 2018, respectively.
While carrying all three of her little ones, Kate suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum, which is extreme morning sickness characterized by severe nausea, persistent vomiting and dehydration.
“Usually women who get it once are more likely to get it again,” Dr. Knopman told Us Weekly exclusively in September 2017. “Risk factors include a personal or family history of HG — watch out Pippa! — and a history of motion sickness or migraines.”
This caused Kate to miss many royal engagements during her pregnancies, but Meghan, also 37, has traveled to multiple continents since confirming in October 2018 that she and Prince Harry are expecting a baby.
“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019,” Kensington Palace’s statement read at the time. “Their Royal Highnesses have appreciated all of the support they have received from people around the world since their wedding in May and are delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”
In January, the former actress told well-wishers in Birkenhead, England, a more specific due date. Meghan said that she is due to deliver in late April or early May — and when her little one arrives, she won’t be taking a long maternity leave.
The duchess “plans to return to work as soon as possible,” a source told Us exclusively in April 2019. “She came into the royal family with so many goals and plans on forging ahead.”
Take a look at the gallery below to see all of the ways that Meghan has veered from Kate’s footsteps during this pregnancy.
Meghan confirmed in October that she is expecting her first child in spring 2019, while Kate announced her pregnancies much earlier. That may have been because the Duchess of Cambrige’s extreme morning sickness caused her to cnacel multiple appearances.

While Kate did cradle her baby bump while expecting, the Duchess of Sussex has been criticized throughout her pregnancy for touching her stomach too much — especially after attending the Fashion Awards in London in December. “If I see one more photo of Meghan Markle cradling that bump I am going to vomit. … You are pregnant……WE KNOW!” one critic wrote at the time, while another added, “She should learn from Kate on how to pose regally when pregnant.”

“At the moment, we understand that she … doesn’t want to do that, isn’t going to do that,” British correspondent Emily Andrews said during an April episode of the “On Heir” podcast when asked whether Meghan would debut her baby on the steps of the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Royal commentator Omid Scobie added: “Given what we know about Meghan, the optics of a totally glamorous, picture-perfect moment hours after giving birth are not quite in alignment with her views on the world.”

Time to Travel
Because of her hyperemesis gravidarum diagnosis, Kate didn’t travel much during her pregnancy, but Meghan has been globe-trotting. Not only was she on a royal tour with Harry when Kensington Palace confirmed that she is pregnant, but she flew to New York City for a baby shower in February 2019.

Considering baby showers are an American tradition, it’s no surprise that Kate never had one. Meghan, though, celebrated at a star-studded party in Manhattan with her friends, including Serena Williams, Gayle King and Amal Clooney.
“Meghan is still struggling with the press in London,” a source told Us exclusively a month after the party. “She was made aware that Kensington Palace and the royal family, that’s not the way they do it with a big, flashy baby shower like the one she had in NY.”
